HAMPSHIRE YOUTH GAMES 2008

South Wonston Table Tennis Club was again privileged to have been invited by Winchester City Council to coach its table tennis squad and select its team for the Hampshire Youth Games 2008 held at Aldershot. All the teams were required to comprise 4 players from school years 7 and 8 only and must include at least one girl.

On arrival, it was found that ten table tennis teams had been entered, including four from Portsmouth, the 2007 champions. The teams were divided into two Groups of 5 teams which played each other. Winchester's team was runner up in its Group and played Test Valley in a semi-final, losing a very close, drawn match against Test Valley by only one point. Test Valley went on to lose in the final against new champions Fareham. Meanwhile, the two losing semi-finalists played each other with Winchester beating Basingstoke & Deane by just 5 points in another very close, drawn match.

All the squad members seemed to enjoy the coaching sessions. Team players, Reuben, Charlotte, Ryan and Morgan all performed to the very best of their abilities in the Games and were rewarded by being able to proudly display Bronze medals, as can be seen in the accompanying photograph taken by John Johnston.
