Winchester Table Tennis League Closed Tournament Heats 2008

The Heats were held at Kings Sports Hall, Winchester, on Sunday 6th April. They were run with the usual calm efficiency and good humour by Antony Moore and Adrian Reeves . Martyn Reeves worked tirelessly at entering all results into his computer, and you can see those results here .

Chris Hannides last played and won the Singles in the mid-1980s, and showed he has lost none of his skill in reaching the Final once more. He was unbeaten in Division 1 this season. The other Singles Finalist will be Glen Wilshere , who won the Junior Singles about 5 years ago.

Steve Robinson and Andy Prince will meet each other in 2 Finals, the 2nd/3rd Division and the Veterans. Andy will no doubt fight both Finals with his usual tenacity, but he will need to be on top form to get the better of Steve, who is one of the League's best defenders.

The Juniors event was missing a few strong players who were away playing in Regional or National level tournaments, but we can still expect an interesting Final between Lewis Creighton and Chrissie Slot. Lewis is a good Division 1 player who lost narrowly to Chris Hannides in the open Singles and almost reached the Doubles final, while Chrissie is placed 30th in the ETTA Under-13 Rankings at the age of 11.

Overall, Finals Night at Itchen Abbas and Avington Village Hall on Saturday 19th April from 7:00 pm looks as if it will provide the usual fascinating mix of attacking and defensive playing styles, temperaments, youth and age. Why not come along? There's plenty of parking, and a bar and raffle will add to the enjoyment.
